Sorry about last week. I dislocated my shoulder and spent 3 hours in the ER and the rest of the week on painkillers.
Anywho, for this week, I think I’ll pick a theme. Something every student can relate to. How about …
drugs and alcohol?
Like in Nashville, Tenn., where authorities say a cop pulled over a Louisville driver because he was tailgating another car. Officers said that the driver gave police a small baggie of mary jane.
But that small bag was just a small part of the 71.8 pounds of marijuana allegedly being carried, and it gave officers the right to inspect, and find, the other green. Oops.
Or where a farmer’s son was pursued by police while allegedly drunkenly driving a tractor. Police said that they had to use CS gas to get him off of the tractor after the pursuit, during which cruisers twice drove alongside the tractor. Bonus: police were called at 4:20 p.m.
Also, the Emerald Isle just got a little more green when an Irish fishing trawler discovered 3,528 pounds of marijuana just off of the coast of Slyne Head in Western Ireland. Worth up to almost $2 million, the weed was wrapped up in eight bales weighing 441 pounds each.
Also, “24” star Kiefer Sutherland was arrested on DUI charges.
See you next week.
“Heavenly Sword,” with its war based combat and…uhh…interesting lead character, came out recently for the PS3. When an invading king kills the clan destined to guard the heavenly sword, once carried by a deity, Nariko takes the sword and stands up to the oncoming force. The only problem — the sword eventually drains mortals of their life force.
Nariko, like so many anime-driven heroines is a well-endowed and scantly clad redhead. If that caught your interest, think of playing it on the PS3 with its amazing graphics. However, if fiery redheads aren’t the only candy you’re looking for in a videogame, the game play itself might also serve you.
The action itself utilizes the Nariko’s immediate surrounding. You can kick debris at your attacker, flip tables to hinder their approach, or (and this is my favorite) throw dead bodies at them. Since this game has a medieval feel, I wonder if those dead bodies are also ridden with the plague.
Although this game is short and slightly cheesy, the amazing blockbuster graphics and intuitive action keep it interesting (and selling in droves).
Another awkward game on the market is “Gundam: Dynasty Warriors.” Ok, first of all, Gundam, which hasn’t really made any fabulous games, recently, is combined with the ever-so-stale Dynasty Warriors. I don’t know how to feel about this one…
Alright, you’re still a dynasty warrior, but you get to run around in an incredibly high-powered suit equipped with more weapons than WOW has spells. And bonus! You get to take this suit across the Gundam Universe to engage in seemingly impossible battles. Luckily, even though you’re up against a hundred enemies, that suit is awfully strong and this game turns into a repetition of the same battle against different antagonists.
On the bright side, Halo 3’s release date is approaching!!! Hopefully, by the time we meet again, I will have spent at least all of Tuesday night fulfilling my bubble-shield fantasies.
Today has been a normal Tuesday for me. First I head to class, come to The Northerner to work on deadline, leave again for class and then come back to the paper until it’s done for the night.
News has been booming around the nation. What caught especially caught my eye is what most people have been talking about later, OJ Simpson. Yes, it’s true, the Associated Press reported that prosecutors are going to charge Simpson with five felonies, including kidnapping, suspicion of assault and robbery with a deadly weapon and armed robbery of sports memorabilia collectors in a casino-hotel room.
Simpson, accused along with three of him comrades involved, are facing the possibility of life in prison.
Now, I’m personally too young to remember his murder case and the infamous car chase between him and police back in 1993, but I’m reminded of it a lot on t.v.
I’m reminded of how he had everything. He was a famous football star back in the day with everything going for him. However, it seems as though the accusation of Simpson possibly murdering Nicole Brown Simpson in 1993 is what brought him down.
I think I was 6 years-old at the time he was pronounced “not-guilty,” I remember not understanding why people were making such a fuss over him. Even though I didn’t understand, I still remembered his name.
I’m from Louisville, and I remember hearing that during the Derby Simpson tried to eat at a restaurant in town but the owner kicked out him out telling the woman he was with to watch out cause Simpson might slit her throat.
I know I don’t completely have my facts straight, but it seems as though Simpson will be forever infamous to many people and in actuality “guilty” of the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson.
But who knows what actually happened that night, all that seems now is that people
Quote of the week: “Chap Stick at the games. If I show up in lip gloss it’s soon gone because of all the nachos I eat.”

Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl won the Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a drama Sept. 16 — and no one was more surprised than Mom and Dad, People Magazine reports. Heigl, 29, phoned into the Ellen DeGeneres show Sept. 18 to tell Ellen what her mother told her: “This year, you know, with The Sopranos women being nominated and it being their last year of the show, I really think they’re going to win – so I don’t want you to be disappointed if you don’t.” Heigl, who announced while accepting her Emmy that her mother didn’t think she’d win, told DeGeneres that her momma did say: “I love you and you’re always a winner.” As for Papa Heigl: “He had a big party in Georgia, “He had a big party in Georgia, and the party was for ‘Its just great to be nominated,’ which turned into, ‘It’s a hell of a lot better to actually win,’ ” Heigl said. “Even my dad was like in shock and said, ‘I really didn’t think you’d win.’ Nobody thought I was going to win.” Now that’s what I call a real confidence booster: when even your parents DON’T think you’re a winner.
Irish actor Colin Farrell is well known for his playboying, partying ways, but Good Samaritan? Never heard of it. But it’s true: the actor gave charity a chance while promoting his newest film “Cassandra’s Dream” last week at the Toronto International Film Festival, msn.com reports. The Toronto Sun reported that the star was signing autographs outside of his hotel when he noticed a homeless man he’d met three years ago, when he was in town filming “A Home at the End of the World.” Farrell met the man when he took the homeless guy, nicknamed “Stress” by locals, to a radio station that was holding a promotion offering $2,000 to anyone who could deliver Farrell to the station. When Farrell recognized Stress, he told him to climb in his chauffeur-driven car, who promptly took him to a Europe Bound Travel Outfitters Post, which sells everything from clothes to tents. “Get him anything he wants,” Farrell said to the employees, who got the homeless man a $500 coat, a sleeping bag and a rolling backpack filled with underwear, socks and boots. “Cool guy,” the store manager told the Sun of the actor. “He doesn’t act like a movie star.” The bill for the shopping trip came to more than $2,000, but the actor wasn’t done yet. Farrell hit up a local cash machine, taking out a stack of money and reportedly arranging to pay for a year’s rent on a room for Stress. “I’m all set up,” he is quoted as telling a local. “This is my chance to get off the street.” The Sun believes Farrell’s Good Samaritan antics cost him around $10,000. Colin’s definitely got my vote for the hottest, nicest actor around.”
EA games released “Skate” this week for the 360 and PS3. EA, known for the Madden series and way too many other variations of sport video gaming, said the innovation of “Skate” is the “unique control scheme that captures the true feel of skating.” I don’t know about you, but I thought button-mashing was the point of sports games.
In the video preview and downloadable demo, EA makes it clear that this “innovative” change makes the game real; the entire sequence revolves around crashing. Even more frustrating is that no two tricks are ever the same — so how do you memorize the square, circle, triangle sequence that wins matches?!

“Stuntman Ignition” released Aug. 28, but has been sorely overlooked. Stuntman (360, PS2, PS3) puts the gamer in some intense situations to create “some of Hollywood’s biggest moments.” Unfortunately, although the scenes are played spontaneously, the driver looks like an astronaut with a facemask. However, if you don’t care about what your character looks like, this game is sure to be a classic—it helps that the trailer is voiced-over by someone who sounds like Mr. Movie phone.

This week was another showstopper for Microsoft as “Halo 3” went Gold. That means more than 400,000 copies of the game have been sold, and it’s not even released yet. Microsoft has also been releasing new episodes of Red Vs. Blue for the occasion.

On Sept. 11, The National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll was released, and the Northern Kentucky University Men’s Soccer Team finds itself at No. 2. My only question as a sports writer here for The Northerner, “Why hasn’t the Cincinnati media, or the Northern Kentucky media covered this?”
I understand that NKU is a Division II school, but look at all divisions not just the one that will get more coverage.
This team has played terrific soccer in the early season posting a 6-0 record. Defense has been its strong point thus far and has proven to be successful in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, defeating then-No. 16 Lewis and then-No. 12 Wisconsin-Parkside by 1-0 scores respectively. What can I say, “Good defense wins championships.”
I am not saying that the Norse are going to run the table and win the Division II National Championship, but that the way the team is playing, it is a team worth watching, and I feel that the local media, not just The Northerner should be covering the team, to help boost morale, plus gain awareness to get more fans in the seats. I know most fans like watching a winner, but not many know about the team and where it plays.
So, when you are looking for something to do this weekend, stop by the Town and Country Sports Complex and root on the Norse Men’s Soccer Team as it will face Ashland University, Sept. 14 at 7:30p.m. On Sept. 16, NKU will face GLVC-rival Bellarmine at 2:30p.m.
Come on Norse fans and the local media, watch some competitive sports teams take action. This is Matt Birkholtz signing off of Norse Force till next week.
Hey, it’s your long lost News Editor Jennifer Corbett. I’ve been kind of non-existent with writing my blogs for the past two weeks. But I’ve been kind of caught up with my first few issues as News Editor, trying to be organized and set my budgets for each week. However, I feel as though it is all working out now and I’m finally getting the hang of it.
But on to something more interesting than my life, today was the six-year anniversary of September 11th. Wow, I cant believe its been six years. I remember sitting in Biology my freshman year of high school and my teacher, Mr. Wiegandt stopped lecturing, walked out of the room and a few minutes later came back with a sadden look on his face. He was a big guy so it was kind of weird to see him so emotional. Well he turned on the t.v. a few minutes later and I saw it, the twin towers burning. To tell you the truth, when I first saw it I didn’t realize the extent of what was happening. I even remember thinking “Why are they showing us this?”
A few minutes later my principal came over the intercom and told us of the national tragedy that was happening before our very eyes.
What got me first is that I had just traveled to New York just a few months earlier for a family vacation. I didn’t even think twice about taking in everything that city had to offer.
During the Spring 07 semester, the Northerner staff had the opportunity to travel to New York for a spring convention. Well, one of my fellow editors and I had the opportunity to tour the New York Times. It was really moving to see the actual photos they had taken during Sept. 11. Something as little as a tea-pot covered in dust was so moving. Other pictures I saw included officers covered in dust trying to catch a breath, a young girl covered in blood and two women looking at the towers with pure horror in their face.
Even though I was only 14-years-old at the time, it still hit home with me. To this day it still does.
I remember my sophomore U.S. history teacher telling me that he will never forget where he was when John F. Kennedy was shot, and well I will never forget where I was when I first heard of the twin towers being hit.
